This blog came about due to an ongoing conversation that I have been having with some fellow conservatives. Recently I was asked to go to a rally for Traditional Marriage and to email various senators asking them to not support Gay Marriage. I politely declined. When asked why, I stated that while I do support Traditional Marriage, I believe that marriage should not be a government institution. Instead I believe that civil unions should be allowed for anyone (Straight Couples, Gay couples, spinster sisters who want to share their property, etc), but religious marriages should not be dictated by the government. If one religion chooses to only recognize straight marriages, it should be their choice.
By now you are probably asking yourself, what does this have to do with abortion? Well, I will tell you. Moral Conservatives are spending so much defending something that the government should not be a part of (i.e. marriage) that they are ignoring something that government needs to be a part of (defending innocent lives).
As a Christian, I believe that homosexuality is not something that God approves of. But I believe that we cannot legislate the sexual acts between two consenting adults, nor can I find any reason (other than Biblical ones) for prohibiting civil unions between homosexuals. Marriages on the other hand should be a holy union, sanctioned by a religious organization.
Abortion however, is the direct killing of an innocent life. It is the murder of someone who cannot protect himself or herself. I know that my marriage will stand holy before God regardless of whether or not homosexuals are allowed to have civil unions (or even marry), but countless lives are children are being destroyed by abortion.
How can we stand up for what is holy and just if we are silent observers to the worst holocaust ever?
I am not at all saying that I condone homosexual marriage. What I am saying is that if we can’t protect the sanctity of life, then how in the world can we protect the sanctity of marriage?
